Fluid bed dryers are dryers that support and move solid particles on a cushion of hot air as the drying mechanism. This method achieves intimate mixing without mechanical damage; used for cereals, tableting granules, salt, coffee, dried vegetables, and many other products. In fluid bed drying, fluidization gas is used as a heating element. Heat may also be successfully presented by other heat sources such as tubes or plates submerged in the fluidized layer. Fluid bed drying is appropriate for agglomerates, granules, powders, and pellets, of particle sizes between 50 and 5,000 microns. Very fine particulate products can necessitate vibration for effective fluid bed drying. Used fluid bed dryers offer advantages in drying particulate materials—it provides product conveyance, productive proportions of heat exchange at high thermal effectiveness while avoiding overheating of single particles.
